Why Scripts in Print™??
by Hazel Hoyle
Screenplays.

As a screenwriter and film producer, I get questions all the time about screenplays. People who are thinking about writing scripts for documentaries, short films, feature-length films and people who are not in the film industry (nor any literary industry for that matter) are curious about screenplays. They are eager to know what a typical written scene in a script would look like. They ask questions about the format, the font, the dialogues, the “how do you show the action scenes in writing?” etc.

For people wanting to write a script, my response is to describe in detail how a scene is set up. For example, they should start with a scene heading, then a description of the set: stating who is there, what they are doing and, after that, the dialogue begins. My most sincere response, however, is they need to read a screenplay and study that. Aside from taking a screenwriter’s course, looking at the real deal alone will provide true clarity and direction about “how it is done.”

For the most part, people who have asked me about screenplays have never read one and aren’t really thinking about writing one. They’re simply interested in reading them because the concept is intriguing, as are most things within the film industry. The mystery of anything new, particularly if it is good, captivates attention and curiosity.

People who read are interested in something new. Film is interesting to pretty much everyone, but until now, screenplays have been foreign objects to literary audiences. Screenplays have been used only for the purpose of producing films, television programs, commercials, music videos and more recently, publicly-made videos for websites like YouTube.

SCRIPTS IN PRINT ™  is a new book series being released exclusively by Oxygen Films Corp that provides readers the opportunity to experience screenplays as a storytelling medium.
   book cover About Phoenix Star
About Phoenix Star is the first book in the SCRIPTS IN PRINT ™ series and, like the many books soon to follow, may be used by uprising writers and filmmakers as an educational tool. However, the series is truly intended as a medium to tell compelling stories in a format that is new and provocative to bookstore customers.

In the film industry, producers often hire writers to adapt books into feature-length screenplays. This is a brilliant way to bring great stories and successful eclipse books to the big screen. We see this happening very frequently at the theatrical level with movies stemming from novels written by famous authors like JK Rowling, John Grisham and Stephanie Meyer, to name just a few.

Another norm for producers is to novelize original screenplays into paperbacks which are released around the same time as the theatrical release. This is a great marketing tactic that provides additional exposure and publicity about the upcoming feature film and produces another stream of revenue for the filmmakers, writers and publishing houses.

SCRIPTS IN PRINT ™ is different. This is a series of screenplays published exclusively by Oxygen Films Corp and partners of the company in book format. Screenplays that have never been produced, but still may be in the future. The books are published in the very format of the original screenplays. The same format a screenwriter would pitch his script to an agent, producer, or production company executive. Only this series is for you, the reader, to enjoy.

The SCRIPTS IN PRINT ™ series offers readers something new and exciting. The series is a collection of books specifically for an audience of readers who are in love with stories, books and film and who are open to a new format.

Starting with About Phoenix Star, readers around the world can finally see the movie as it is first seen through the eyes of its filmmakers - by reading the script itself, rather than by watching the movie, reading a novelization of the script, after the fact, or reading the original novel from which the feature-length screenplay was adapted.

We have over 200 submissions from writers interested in putting their hard work on screenplays into action in the format of published books. They anticipate future opportunities to be produced for feature-length theatrical releases and we are holding the rights to manage offers to that effect. But in the meantime we look forward to simply letting the world see these literary pieces of art in their original form as screenplays.

So we look forward to sharing our book series and soon a book line - because
whether these scripts will be seen on the big screen or not,  they are great stories to READ particularly in their original format - as screenplays.
